I have little to blog about, and so therefore I figured the only answer was to talk about ourselves for a bit. Many of you would have attended the Ellison Hawker Bookshop quiz night held at the beginning of this month, and while we had a few quirks in the system, it all seemed to go relatively well.

Naturally we're extending our much appreciated thank-you's to those who helped us out- Murdoch Books, Capricorn Link, Pan Macmillan, Penguin Books and Pembroke Wine. It was many kinds of AWESOME.

Other excitements are the new shipment of exciting Last Gasp stock, including but not limited to the 'Hello Maggot' range of stuffed toys and Mark Ryden's Tree Show postcards.

Yesterday we went to the opening of 'Go Graphic' - an exhibition featuring award winning Tasmanian graphic artists, illustrators and film makers. It's on in the wonderful space that is the Allport Library & Museum of Fine Arts at the State Library of Tasmania in Murray St. It's on from today until October 18 and well worth a long look. My favourite bit was getting to see Madeleine Rosca's sketches for 'Hollow Fields' - super, super cool.

The exhibition is running in conjunction with the State Library's 'Graphic Novels - Try Something Different' program. If you're looking for some ideas for which graphic novel to read next have a look at their website http://www.statelibrary.tas.gov.au/readrelax/graphicnovels
or come into the shop and grab a flyer - there is a set of 3 illustrated by Christopher Downes and they should adorn all attractive walls.

Alice in Sunderland by Bryan Talbot.

Alice in Sunderland is a graphic novel like no other. Bryan Talbot takes the city of Sunderland and the story of Lewis Carroll and Alice Liddell (the 'real' Alice) as the spine of his story and around them spins a spectacularly diverse range of different stories. He explores Carroll's links with Sunderland and shows how the city inspired his masterpieces. He delves into the city's history, from the Venerable Bede to George Formby, from its heyday as the greatest shipbuilding port in the world to its present multicultural mix.

Talbot's artwork is a spectacular mixture of different styles: black and white ink line and pencil drawing, watercolour, collage and digitally manipulated photographic artwork. His stories are told from the stage of the Sunderland Empire theatre, an Edwardian music hall, and the book is a genuine variety performance. In Alice in Sunderland he shows - triumphantly - how local history is national history in microcosm, how one story begets another. The result is a landmark book in the graphic field.

Thomas M. Disch (February 2, 1940 – July 4, 2008) was an American science fiction author and poet.
His most famous works include (most of which are out of print) Echo Round His Bones, Camp Concentration, 334, and The Brave Little Toaster, to name just a few.

Sway: A Novel by Zachary Lazar

Murakami's 12th work of fiction is darkly entertaining and more novella than novel. When amateur trombonist and soon-to-be law student Tetsuya Takahashi walks into a late-night Denny's, he espies Mari Asai, 19, sitting by herself, and proceeds to talk himself back into her acquaintance. Tetsuya was once interested in plain Mari's gorgeous older sister, Eri, whom he courted, sort of, two summers previously. Murakami then cuts to Eri, asleep in what turns out to be some sort of menacing netherworld. Tetsuya leaves for overnight band practice, but soon a large, 30ish woman, Kaoru, comes into Denny's asking for Mari: Mari speaks Chinese, and Kaoru needs to speak to the Chinese prostitute who has just been badly beaten up in the nearby "love hotel" Kaoru manages. Murakami's omniscient looks at the lives of the sleeping Eri and the prostitute's assailant, a salaryman named Shirakawa, are sheer padding, but the probing, wonderfully improvisational dialogues Mari has with Tetsuya, Kaoru and a hotel worker named Korogi sustain the book until the ambiguous, mostly upbeat dénouement.

Dexter After Dark by Jeff Lindsay.
In Lindsay's third novel to feature endearing Miami cop and serial killer Dexter Morgan (after 2005's Darkly Devoted Dexter), the Dark Passenger, the voice inside Dexter's head that from time to time drives him to the Theme Park of the Unthinkable, inexplicably disappears while Morgan is investigating a gruesome double murder on the University of Miami campus. The crime scene, at which two co-eds were ritualistically burned and beheaded, gives even the human vivisection–loving vigilante the creeps. As the burned and beheaded body count continues to mount, Morgan realizes that the force behind the killings is something even more evil than his Dark Passenger. Though the macabre wit that powered the first two installments of this delightfully dark series (also a hit on TV's Showtime) is still evident, this third entry takes a decidedly deep introspective turn as Dexter is forced to contemplate not only life without his enigmatic companion but also who—or what—he truly is.
